Rally in Minnesota against plan to strip protections from the wolf

Hundreds expected to testify at today's public hearing

St. Paul, Minn.— Today wolf advocates rallied at Gregory Park in Brainerd, Minn. before the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s only public hearing on the U.S. Department of Interior’s proposal to end federal protection for nearly all gray wolves in the lower 48 states. The rally featured speakers and advocates with signs. Hundreds are expected to testify at the hearing.

Dr. Maureen Hackett, founder and president of Howling For Wolves, a Minnesota-based wolf advocacy organization, said:

“Many state officials already disregard the damage that wolf-killing has on the population, the pack structure, and the wolves’ genetic diversity. Wolves die in many ways when they lose federal protections, and this harms the long-term survival of wolves for future generations. Human attitudes are not ready for wolves to lose federal protections.”

Advocates from Howling For Wolves, Center for Biological Diversity, Defenders of Wildlife, Endangered Species Coalition, Friends of the Wisconsin Wolf and Wildlife, Humane Society of the United States, Humane Society Legislative Fund, and Sierra Club have participated in today’s events.
